Lost at Sea

by Cheryl Merrick

Bound by a need for
deep meaningful conversation,
We huddle together
Lost in a sea of
entertaining superficial chatter.

Anxiously fearing the loneliness
of a crowd,
We seek the security of a close friend.

Driven by admonitions
To reach out,
Not be "Shy"
and "To Be more loving,"
We stumble into the social sea,
only to find that we,
like sea gulls,
may enjoy an occasional bobbing
with other sea gulls and fish.

But being fish,
darting through the water in schools,
is something we simply can’t do.
