Success

by Cheryl Merrick

The old man had died.
As crowds fill the room,
a passerby wonders if it is because
of the man’s great business success,
but whispered tones reveal
this man’s true success,
“he really cared about me,”
“he took time to listen,”
“he was always there to help me
work out any problem,” and
“he treated me with respect.”

The loyalty of his employees,
his friends,
a continuing harvest
of the service
he had sown over many years.
