Lack of Faith

by Cheryl Merrick

She, needing understanding,
wants him to listen.
He, desiring to help her,
offers solutions.

Feeling rejected,
the wife no longer
shares her feelings.
Rebuffed, the husband
turns more and more
to his own interests.

Rejecting the support the other could offer,
they stumble on, tired and stressed,
He not giving the emotional support
she needs,
And she not accepting the counsel and help
he offers.

Clothed in martyr’s garb,
they justify their refusal to change
by blaming the other
for their failure to communicate.

Problems unresolved,
they turn from warmth,
and in a cold stillness allow loneliness
to silently engulf them.
