Finding Love

by Cheryl Merrick

The young couple
continued their bickering.
Doubting, they demanded
that the other
prove their love:
“IF you really loved ME,
You would be more understanding.”
“IF you really moved ME,
You would be more passionate.”

Blinded by their selfishness,
and wanting some idealized mate
who instantly senses and meets
all their needs,
they neglect to teach and support
their only too human partner.

Pressuring and pouting,
they attempt to force
the other into making
them feel loved,
all the while feeling
more and more empty,
til at last,
they realize that it is only in
Losing themselves
that they can
Find Love.
