So Small

Concerned over a late
     spelling test,
She asks how I can
     remain so calm.

How can I explain
     how small it seems
when I am only a pill
     away from stepping
     through the veil.


How can I explain
     how small it seems
after dealing with
    unsupportive family,
    children with autism,
    learning disabilities,
    and severe health problems.

How can I explain
     how small it seems
after feeling the pain of
     waywardness,
     abuse,
     and parents dying.

After experiencing
     teenagers,
     weddings,
     and the birth of a grandchild,
a few moments late
    for a routine test
does indeed seem
     So small.
