Best Help

by Cheryl Merrick

I thought I could help best
by doing the things he valued,
So I weeded and shopped
until I dropped.

Soon it became evident
that my small accomplishments
were requiring all my energy
leaving me in a fog of exhaustion
for the remainder of the day.

Though he seemed happy at what
I had gotten done,
they were things he could
have done in a few minutes.

Finally I realized
that my minimal physical capacity
was not the best help.

He needed a person who could
bring to him all the abilities he lacked.
The Best Help I can give him
is to simply
Be Me.
