Anticipating The Moment

by Cheryl Merrick

Dutifully following the leadership
of our “elders”,
we begin our career.
Seeking their counsel and advice,
we slowly gain experience.

Finally, they are gone,
leaving us to pass along
the torch of experience,

but, to our astonishment,
few care about the torch,
or even want to receive it.

Bewildered, we find ourselves
in a world where
new is valued;
where our hard earned experience
is no longer “relevant” and viewed as “outdated”
and where we are seen as “antiquated”.

We find ourselves surrounded by the young,
who bound by the commonality of their youth,
unite, anxious to try out their new ideas,
leaving us shut out;
our experience not valued
and our opinions not heard.

We, wanting to continue the “tried and true”,
find ourselves merely tolerated by the young
as they eagerly anticipate the moment
when all will be turned over
into their “competent” hands.
