Marching

by Cheryl Merrick

Like a call to arms
“It must be done!”
Is shouted from each front door.

Inside each busy, orderly home,
they begin their day
of caring for their superfluous possessions,
and managing their complicated schedules.

As each task is completed,
they sigh with contentment,
before rushing happily onto
their next self prescribed “should”.

Giving their meticulous attention to detail
a religious sanctity,
they demand society’s respect.

Determined that all should march
 to their regimented tune,
they seek to “ shape up” those who are out of step,
only to be baffled by a few errant individuals
who quietly, firmly, and unpentantly
insist on dancing along their own path.
