Always a Mother

by Cheryl Merrick

They’re on their own.
You cheer them on as they manage their own lives-
getting an education, choosing a mate,
making a living, and raising a family.
You share in their triumphs and sorrows.

When they ask, you help them
sort out their feelings and thoughts,
reminding them of Gospel principles.
Accepting their independence,
you council them to pray,
and humbly accept
the revelation they receive.

Yes, they no longer need you

to bandage their knees, but their hearts.
They no longer require you
to drive them to lessons,
but to guide them in their path of life.
You see that your example of righteous living
is a strength to them
and know that you are
Always a Mother
