Leading

by Cheryl Merrick

Will I choose to lead the way
back  to our heavenly home,
or will I follow others
aimless ramblings?

Will I set a righteous example
as I strive to follow the Lord,
or will I simply demonstrate
mindless obedience?

Will I soar through the clouds,
or become lost caring for things?

Will I bury my talents,
 or share them?

Which do I choose?
Fulfillment or suppression?
The choice is mine.

Focused

by Cheryl Merrick

Focused on what
is eternally important,
Listening to the Spirit,
I walk on the path
leading home.

Shining Brightly

by Cheryl Merrick

Afraid of appearing different,
I pause,
tempted to cover my light
with a politically correct basket.
I look up.
As I do so,
reflecting the Savior's great light,
my small light shines brightly,
its glow merging with the glow
from myriads of others
who light the path home.

Sun and Candles

by Cheryl Merrick

I tried to fit
into the system,
or maybe I just
tried to fit it to me.

I wanted to help
children grow–
and I did.

I want to continue
helping children–
and I will.

New Image

by Cheryl Merrick

Given approval for being
     “sweet and caring”
I filled my life with affectionate expressions,
     while closely hiding my
     “undesirable” traits.

As the years pass,
I come to see myself as
     weak and incompetent,
til, finally,
     worn from repeated failures
of trying to be this “loving person”,
I relinquish this dream.

Gifts from the Mind and Heart

by Cheryl Merrick

The ability to understand hearts
     perceiving needs and potential
To give counsel and encouragement
To share insights and solve problems
To see the path and show the way ahead
Gifts from the mind and heart
To share

A New World

by Cheryl Merrick

Blessed to have my forward momentum
stopped,
I’m shown a new way,
where my energies will no longer be scattered
in mere responding to others.
With a new sense of purposeful leadership,
I enter a new world.
In this place filled with thoughts,
my keen mind roams solving problems
and my spirit soars to inspire.
Here I can effectively help others progress,
At last,  I’ve found a world
where I feel welcome.

The Leap

by Cheryl Merrick

Knowing my security lies not in
predictability but in principles,
I hold high my lamp of faith,
and longing to grow,
fearlessly leap
into the unknown darkness.

The Guide

by Cheryl Merrick

With empathy and love
I listen

Understanding their
dreams and fears
I respond

Holding up the lamp of hope
I lead

Looking for opportunities
I encourage

With the assurance
of correct principles,
I stand firm

Knowing the path
I guide us home

Soaring

by Cheryl Merrick

Helping you, I find wings,
and soar with my mind and heart,
No longer hobbled by a body
     ill and worn.

Agile and capable,
I share my experience with you,
and, as I see you grow,
we soar together,
my bounds and pains forgotten
in the joy of our flight.

Prepared for This Time

by Cheryl Merrick

Through years of debilitating illness
with no relief in sight,
Through learning to work
together in marriage,
and by nurturing our children
through their challenges,
My heart has been softened
and my understanding increased.;

Til now I stand,
Tempered and stretched,
Tested and taught,
Prepared to lead
in paths of righteousness.

The Navigator

by Cheryl Merrick

Like the navigator of old,
she carefully plots
their homeward course.

Adjusting for the winds and currents
of today’s world,
and striving to avoid
hidden shoals of evilness,
silently she ponders the stars,
safely guiding
her family toward
their eternal home.

Mission in Life

by Cheryl Merrick

To model how to follow the Lord
To show my faith in Him
     even in adverse circumstances
To cheerfully accept His will
     in my life
To teach correct principles
     and live them
To be an example of integrity
To lead by my righteous example
To light the way

Light Bearer

by Cheryl Merrick

Its source lies within.
Born from quiet moments
and deep reflection.
Nourished by hours
of pondering and prayer.
Energized by intense feeling.
Guided by true principles
and focused upon eternal goals,
The strength of faith glows,
producing a light
to guide safely home.

Work!

by Cheryl Merrick

What I do well and choose to do
is WORK.
It is necessary toil
and MUST be done.
It is essential activity
that contributes to
the well-being of society.
It is what all
SHOULD be doing.

On Becoming a Star

by Cheryl Merrick

When my children were young,
they played in the protective warmth
of my morning sun.

Later, in my clear afternoon light,
I taught them endless lessons
on room cleaning and report writing.

Learning well,
they ventured from me.
The evening of adolescence had come.

Now, in a night sky I glow,
a distant beacon of light,
a constant of love,
a star,
guiding the way home.

Nurtured by the Rain

by Cheryl Merrick

His words fall with a joyful welcoming
upon my soul,
as rain upon a land too long exposed
to the withering rays
of an intense worldly sun.

The question, “What do you do?”,
is followed by the belittling, “Oh!”,
when I reply I’m a full time Homemaker.
So much is not said, but it is clear
that they see me as weak and incompetent,
a “nothing” who is wasting her time and talents.

Success

by Cheryl Merrick

The old man had died.
As crowds fill the room,
a passerby wonders if it is because
of the man’s great business success,
but whispered tones reveal
this man’s true success,
“he really cared about me,”
“he took time to listen,”
“he was always there to help me
work out any problem,” and
“he treated me with respect.”

The loyalty of his employees,
his friends,
a continuing harvest
of the service
he had sown over many years.

Power

by Cheryl Merrick

Grasping for power
   he bellows orders
   demanding that
   impossible deadlines be met.
With threats he is determined
   to bend his employees
   to his will,
thereby making
   his company a success.
