Carrying Capacity

by Cheryl Merrick
After five days in a small trailer
with no laundry or dishes to do,
or house to clean,
I relax.

Though glad to be home again,
I'm suddenly overwhelmed.
There is so much to do!
Must I do everything?
Can I remain relaxed?
No, my headache, tight neck,
aching jaw, and upset stomach
declare I can't!

The Binding

by Cheryl Merrick

Dragging my exhausted body along,
I force myself to do what others need;
not what I am good at,
     not what I need.

Depressed, I continue on
feeling my love
as a heavy chain
binding me to a life
of drudgery.

Lower and lower I sink,
my weariness growing heavier
as I allow myself
to be bound to the rock.

*as a dominant introverted intuitive I have little ability to handle details

Needing Each Other

by Cheryl Merrick

He needs predictability
I need opportunity

He needs order
I need flexibility

He needs routine
I need variety

He needs time to work
I need time to think

He needs a plan
I need follow through

He needs my enthusiasm
I need his calmness

We both need each other

Work!

by Cheryl Merrick

What I do well and choose to do
is WORK.
It is necessary toil
and MUST be done.
It is essential activity
that contributes to
the well-being of society.
It is what all
SHOULD be doing.

Horses and Eagles

by Cheryl Merrick

The horses gallop together,
     strong and beautiful,
their hooves firmly striking the earth,
     all senses ever alert,
living fully in the moment.

Overhead, a lone eagle soars
in a world where unseen currents
lift him effortlessly to new heights.

The horses and eagle gaze upon each other,
     neither wishing to trade
     their connection to the earth,
nor their view from the sky.
